Blue Light and Eye Health — Tips to Keep You Smiling

February 22, 2022

Workplace Eye Wellness Month, celebrated in March, is a great opportunity for DeltaVision® to remind our readers that eye health, like good oral health, plays an important role in your overall health. With adults and children alike logging so much screen time in today’s world — nearly 60 percent of Americans use digital devices for five or more hours a day1 blue light could be taking a toll on your eyes.

Linked to digital eye strain, blue light is high-energy light emitted from computer monitors, tablets, smartphones, and TVs. In fact, 80 percent of VSP® optometrists report the effects of blue light exposure are increasing,2 and may lead to headaches, eye strain, dry eyes, or blurry vision.

What steps can you take to reduce exposure to blue light while confidently connecting to your digital devices?

  • Maintain your digital distance. Find a comfortable viewing distance from your screen and position your computer monitor between 24 to 28 inches away from your eyes.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Give your eyes a break every 20 minutes and spend at least 20 seconds looking at something at least 20 feet away.
  • Schedule an eye exam. Talk to your eye doctor about your lifestyle and ask about the best options for reducing eye strain.
  • Limit screen time before bed. Turn devices off a few hours before going to bed and consider downloading an app that reduces blue light on your phone or tablet as the sun goes down.

If you’re concerned about blue light exposure and digital eye strain, and want to schedule an eye exam, we can point you in the right direction.
