How to Get Rid of Bad Breath & What Causes Halitosis

January 23, 2019

Bad breath isn't only embarrassing, it can be a symptom of a greater oral health or medical problem.

Halitosis—the medical term for bad breath—is not to be taken lightly. Bad breath can affect anyone at any age, but it is more commonly occurring in adults.

Causes of Halitosis

  • Medical infection
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney Failure
  • Digestive Problems
  • Liver Malfunction
  • Periodontal Disease
  • Dry Mouth
  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Skipping Meals
  • Poor Oral Hygiene

The truth is that most people don't know hey have bad breath, and will generally find out when someone else tells you. Mouthwash or mints may temporarily mask the odor, but they are not the ideal solution. It should be taken seriously and in order to get to the bottom line cause, it is best to take a trip to your doctor or dentist.

How to Improve Bad Breath

  • Carry sugarless gum/mints—they do help increase saliva flow that naturally cleans the mouth
  • Brush and floss regularly—this helps remove food particles that remain in the mouth that can cause decay
  • Be sure to also brush/clean your tongue
  • If you smoke—STOP NOW—not only will you improve breath you'll also improve your overall health
  • Eat a healthy diet—green or black tea inhibits bacteria from growing in the mouth and gums
  • Eat yogurt with active cultures— this help reduce harmful bacteria and odor causing hydrogen sulfide
  • Choose fiber rich fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, celery. They increase saliva production which rinses your mouth naturally
  • Opt for foods rich in Vitamin C, they also help reduce bacteria in the mouth
  • Last but not least: Don't skip meals – eating a healthy diet of foods that are good for you also are good for your oral health and promote fresh smelling breath!
